I remember feeling so frustrated when I couldn't produce the recordings and mixes that I had in my head. Here's some of the advice I got: "Upgrade your interface, those crap converters in your DIGI 002 are hurting your recordings for sure". "Buy some high-end API or Neve preamps, THEN your mixes will sound clearer and more 3D". "You'll never be able to record quality tracks with your cheap microphones. Splurge on some Neumanns and thank me later". Well, you know what? I eventually got to work with all of the gear mentioned above (in bigger studios) and my recordings and mixes STILL SUCKED. I gotta admit that it was a rough time. I could no longer blame my crappy results on my "crappy" gear. Luckily, it all changed for me when I came across a simple interview with one of my favorite producers, Andy Sneap. In the interview, Andy shared his approach to microphone placement and it was a technique that I had never heard of before.
