Cars driving past brick in road STORYLINE Clean-up operations were underway in Budapest on Tuesday, a day after anti-government riots on the Hungarian revolution's 50th anniversary left the capital disrupted. Scores of people were injured, after police fired rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon at anti-government protesters, on the day Hungary commemorated the 50th anniversary of its uprising against the Soviets. Some police officers were also injured, an emergency official said on Monday. In Rakoczi Street - the sight of most of the clashes - cleaners cleared up broken glass and rubble from the streets. The anniversary celebrations on Monday started peacefully, but as night fell crowds of protestors packed the streets standing off against riot police. Earlier in the day police had expelled several hundred protesters from Kossuth Square outside the country's parliament, where many had been camping for weeks, demanding the prime minister be dismissed. In one incident marking an escalation in the disorder, an unarmed Soviet-era T34 tank, part of an exhibit about the 1956 uprising, was hijacked by anti-government protesters, who drove it through crowds towards police. By nightfall, police were firing rubber bullets and using water cannons and tear gas to disperse the thousands of protesters - most of them peacefully demanding to be allowed back to Kossuth Square to commemorate the 1956 revolution. Protests against the government first began on September 17th, when Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany was heard admitting on a leaked recording that the government had lied about the economy before winning re-election in April. Several nights of rioting last month left 150 police and dozens of participants injured.
