Octopus Reproduction! The typical octopus lives in isolation and spends a majority of their adult life searching for a companion. Once a male octopus finds a companion, they will use a modified arm, called the “hectocotylus”, to mate with the female octopus. The hectocotylus is specialized to store and transfer spermatophores to the female. Depending on the species, the male octopus will either reach into the female’s oviduct with their modified arm, or completely detach it from a safe distance, where the arm will swim towards the female octopus. The whole mating ritual can last from several minutes to several hours. Afterwards, the female octopus will store the spermatophores until she is ready to lay her eggs. The octopus reproductive process is a rather sad one, as it’s the final act an octopus performs. In some octopus species, the male octopus will either be eaten by his larger female counterpart during the act of mating, or escapes, and dies off several weeks later. The female octopus will attempt to consume the male octopus as her last source of nutrient before entering a prolonged reproductive journey, which lasts several weeks to several months. Once the mother is ready, she will find a secluded area or den to lay her eggs, which are weaved together and normally hung from the undersides of a rock. The mother will diligently watch over her eggs, guarding and protecting them from would-be predators, while consistently blowing fresh oxygenated water over her eggs, keeping them clean. As time goes on, the mother will begin shutting down her organs and other bodily functions to focus solely on maintaining her eggs. This grueling process can take up to several months, but it is her last and final act. Once the eggs hatch, she will propel the larvae towards the surface before completely wasting away.
