CESA celebrates World Engineering Day with a special presentation by WSP showcasing Eskom’s groundbreaking Battery Energy Storage Solutions (BESS) Phase 1 Project—an 800MWh distributed storage initiative across eight sites in the Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and KwaZulu‑Natal. This milestone project highlights the critical role of engineering in strengthening South Africa’s energy system and supporting a more resilient, renewable‑ready grid. Key Highlights Featured in the Video: Eskom’s first utility‑owned BESS programme: This marks the first time Eskom will own, operate, and maintain large‑scale battery energy storage facilities across multiple provinces. One of the largest BESS projects in the country: The Skaapvlei (P1) site ranks among the top five biggest BESS facilities in South Africa, procured directly by Eskom and through the IPPO. Direct benefits to the grid and communities: The BESS sites will deliver energy support, helping reduce loadshedding during peak demand and maintenance outages, while also providing ancillary services and relieving network congestion—with impacts tailored to each site’s grid conditions.
