I use several "hacks" when setting up my home theater, and the "Gain Hack" can really improve dynamics with most subs... Vv Click "SHOW MORE" vV "The List", subwoofers that are dramatically deeper: http://www.subwoofer101.com/best-subw... This series is about short, easily digestible "hacks" that allow you to get more out of your current setup. Here is the link to the Bite-sized Bass Hacks playlist: • Bite-sized Bass Hacks This hack works with varied effectiveness depending on the sub you have. It's a "sometimes hack", but I always use it to ensure that I'm getting the most I possibly can out of whatever sub I'm running. The difference is almost always noticeable, but even if not it won't hurt. Stay tuned for my hack on dialing in subs by ear, or see my more detailed video in the mean time: • Subwoofer Gain & How I Dial In Subwoofers ... If you run your AVR Subwoofer Level at 0.0, you might run your subwoofer's gain dial at 20-40% (depending on the sub) for balanced bass. If you then reduce your AVR Subwoofer Level to -11.0 then you will need to increase the gain on the subwoofer (maybe as high as 55-80%) to compensate to get the same balance of bass. That gain structure has given me much more "oomph" and potency, while still sounding well balanced. In many ways, it's like upgrading to a more powerful subwoofer with some subs. The bass is more potent/dynamic, like you would experience going to a comparable but higher wattage sub. Granted, you can get a higher wattage sub from a different brand and actually go backwards, but that's another topic... Going the other way, if you want to reduce the dynamics so it doesn't disturb your neighbors as much, the gain dial on the subwoofer is lowered, AVR's Subwoofer Level is higher, and the resulting bass is less potent and "softer" at the same relative balance of bass. Just know that the lower you run the gain dial and the higher the AVR Subwoofer level, the more likely you are to experience clipping. I wouldn't go much above 0.0 on the AVR's Subwoofer Level to avoid clipping. Here is my "Apartment Tips" video: • Apartment Subwoofer Tips (Condos, Townhous... All in all, this is one of my favorite hacks. It breathes new life into subs, and "can" be a cure for upgrade-itis, or at least a temporary deterrent. Good bass is pretty addictive! Just keep 2 things in mind: If your subs start to complain (make bad noises) then you may need to ease off the gain. If this is the case, more potent dual subwoofers from "The List" might be a good idea: http://www.subwoofer101.com/best-subw... Also know that this may effect your subwoofer's "Auto On" feature. If you have any doubts, just try the different extremes and see for yourself if you can tell a difference in potency. Just remember that at each extreme (gain high or gain low) the AVR's subwoofer level should be adjusted to achieve the same "balance" of bass.
