"Number Discontinued" by Margaret Simpson, adapted for BBC Radio's *Saturday Night Theatre*, is a dystopian thriller set in the not-so-distant future. The story is based on the premise that in this future society, every person is registered with a unique number in a central computer. The plot centers on a young hospital doctor named Jonny Lawler, who has devised a risky method to protect patients who have lost their numbers. The conflict arises when Lawler is called in to see a car crash victim. This new case draws him into a struggle with another form of manipulation of the system, ultimately forcing him to confront the dark side of this centralized, number-based society. The drama was adapted by Barry Campbell from Margaret Simpson's novel "Sorry, Wrong Number."
