*MISSING MASTS* Twin Sails Bridge 24/6/23

A bridge with more than just a few problems. The Twin Sails Bridge is a bascule bridge located in Poole, Dorset which provides a diversionary route for when the old bridge is open to water traffic. The bridge was constructed from 2010 to 2012 and was scheduled to open in February of that year but road surfacing issues delayed the opening to April. Unlike other bascule bridges, the Twin Sails Bridge has a unique look as the lifting portion is designed to look like two sails passing each other hence its name. But thats all the positives we have, this bridge THIS BRIDGE has had a really troubled history. On top of road surfacing the bridge has had a serious habit of breaking down while in operation forcing the road to be closed for hours or even days. In fact, for a period in 2018 the bridge was closed due to hydraulic issues in the lifting mechanism. Spontaneous closures continued until 2020 due the fact that the bridge has a different design than most other lifting bridges. Oh the problems didn’t end there, in January 2023, another fault occurred with the bridge that resulted in one of the mast ends breaking off. The other mast end that didn’t break has since been removed as can be seen in the video. It’s unknown whether they’ll be repaired.
