Extraction is nothing but tooth removal. So it can be your front tooth, that is the incisors or it can be your back tooth, that is your molars. After the removal of the tooth, there is a socket which is left behind it he bone, that needs to be filled in with bone and complete healing needs to take place and sockets need to be cover by gums .there are certain instructions that we need to follow to maintain the healing process after extraction. So what do we do? The patient will be asked to bite on gauze for 30 – 40 minutes. This is going to create a pressure and create a clot formation. After 30 – 40 minutes, we recommend the patient to wash their hands and to remove the gauze and not to spit because spitting is going to cause a negative pressure inside the mouth resulting in dislodgement of clot formation. So the patient is asked not to spit because it causes a negative pressure inside the mouth resulting in dislodgment of clot formation. If the bleeding had not stopped, then the process of keep in the gauze can be continued for the next couple of hours. Placing of ice pack is advised or sugar free ice-cream would help in clot formation. After extraction we would recommend the patients not to take anything hot because that would probably affect the extracted site. If an extraction is done under local anesthesia, there is going to be numbness in that area. So the patient is not asked to bite on the lips or the cheeks so that there is not going to be any further complication following extraction. It is advised not to put the tongue or brush or finger to check whether the area is healed. All these things should avoided. It is also advised to do salt water rinsing in lukewarm water. You need to rinse our mouth after 24 hours after extraction. It is also advised not to walk around in hot sun for atleast 24 hours post extraction because this could initiate some amount of discomfort and it can aggravate the problem. However if there is any kid of swelling, the first 48 hours it is very normal to have a swelling, but if it continues for more than 3 – 4 days, it is better to call back to your dental office and find out what could be done about that. Post-operative medication, post extraction antibiotics or pain killers are given. So it has to be taken according to the prescription, according to what the doctor has informed and because this is a wound, it is important to maintain this clean and neat. So the oral hygiene practice has to be maintained. There are some patients who stop brushing thinking that it is going to disturb the extracted wound. You have to continue washing our mouth, rinsing, brushing your teeth after 24 hours after extraction. If you follow the post-operative instructions, then the healing process will speeden.
