When today's teens look back on their youth, COVID-19 may turn out to be the most impactful shared experience they recall. How have their lives changed since stay-at-home directives were issued, and with what impact on their well-being? What sources of resilience are they drawing on to navigate this challenging time? What role is technology playing? Through virtual interviews, ecological momentary assessments (in-situ surveys), and participatory design activities, our research team is following a group of teens in Seattle, Washington, and Berlin, Germany, during the coronavirus pandemic. We are investigating how their interactions with family members and peers have changed; what their experiences with online schooling have been like; the variety of ways they are using technology; and how they are engaging with the events surrounding the unfolding coronavirus pandemic. We are particularly attuned to how teens talk about their well-being in the context of their daily activities, including the things that support or undermine their mental health. Including teens from Seattle and Germany helps us generate insight into cultural similarities and differences in teens’ responses to this global crisis. This research will provide insight into how adolescence, a developmental period marked by changing family relationships, a heightened focus on peers, and identity exploration, is impacted by a worldwide event that has drastically changed the daily patterns of behavior that frame these developmental undertakings. The participatory design work with teens will generate design suggestions to guide the development of technology-enabled strategies to support teen well-being and resilience during crisis events.
