Impact work should be a large part of what a traditional taekwondo martial artist do. We need to develop our techniques in a holistic way, and we need "sharp weapons". The way to go about doing this is to actually hit things. We can not hit our training partners all of the time full force, so we need to use some sort of training equipment; a heavy bag, focus/punching mitts, striking post etc. Most people I believe will agree on this, but I have heard quite a few times that using gloves on the other hand is not something a traditional martial artist should do and that it is not smart to use them, and that we therefore should ONLY practise bare knuckle. I disagree with this, because I believe it is a logical fallacy to make this into a binary argument where you either practise with gloves or without it and that is all. You can do an integrated approached doing some training bare knuckle and some with gloves. I think an integrated approach to this is both smart and healthy.
