Federal agents report more arrests than DC police during crime crackdown amid protesting bystanders

Vice President JD Vance personally thanked federal law enforcement agencies and National Guard members for helping to crack down on crime in the District on Wednesday. "D.C. is already safer than it was nine days ago, but we're going to make it safer still," he said. According to D.C. police, 527 arrests have been made since August 7. Early Wednesday, the White House reported a higher number showing 551 total arrests in D.C. during the same period. "I can't tell you exactly how they report, what they report, or coordinate their numbers," said D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser. Federal authorities said any arrest made during the federal enforcement falls under the operation's arrest totals regardless of which agency makes the arrest. "What people have to understand... with the addition of 500 more officers, you're going to have more arrests," said Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith. "You're going to have more traffic stops. So, we have to anticipate that because we have an enhanced police presence." A White House official said of the 551 reported arrests, 225 were related to immigration enforcement.
