The purpose of the Mid-Year Safety Check-in Session is to provide an opportunity for School Board Safety leads to: Explore this school year's (2024-2025) safety priorities and the related implementation supports available. The main focus is on the Types of Supervision updates and the new Disability-Centred Movement Tool & Resource on OPASSE. Gain insight into the safety priorities planned for the 2025-2026 school year which include Swim Assessment and Concussion Protocol updates Identify potential supports/resource needed to assist school boards with implementation of safety practices IMPORTANT CONTENT NOTES: This session was designed to provide valuable information and resources to support a better understanding of safety in physical activity settings. Our facilitators provided information and insights related to this school year’s and next school year’s safety priorities; however, for questions related to specific situations involving physical activity in classes, intramurals, recess, sports teams, trips, or other recreational settings, we encourage you to submit those inquiries in writing to Ophea through the online Ask Ophea tool (https://safety.ophea.net/form/ask-ophea) or through directly emailing [email protected]. This allows Ophea to ensure consistent responses, track answers, and provide information that aligns with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines. Ophea encourages you to reach out for those specific questions to ensure the best possible support. In addition, please note that each school board is responsible for developing their own safety policy. Publicly funded school boards in Ontario may RAISE the standards if they wish, but they are strongly encouraged not to LOWER them. Ultimately, the primary responsibility for the safety of students rests with school boards and their employees. Therefore, we strongly recommend that teachers/coaches/intramural supervisors/school administrators check with their school board to ensure alignment with their school board policies.
