Eric Troyer: Vocals, keyboards Rory Dodd: Backing vocals Savron Hudson: Programming, percussion Fly: Guitars Horns unknown Written by Eric Troyer In a 1989 press release for his girl-group Pandora's Box, Jim Steinman proudly proclaimed that later in the year he would start work on "a new Electric Light Orchestra album". Legal technicalities notwithstanding, this was at least true in spirit - Steinman had been roped in to work with Bev Bevan, Louis Clark, and Pete Haycock on ELO Part II's debut album, thanks to his prior work with the Don Arden-signed Air Supply, and the smash hit "Making Love Out Of Nothing At All". While Pete Haycock replaced Jeff Lynne on guitar duties, Haycock and Bevan weren't nearly as prolific as ELO's iconic frontman when it came to songwriting, and the absent "magic fingers" of Richard Tandy on keyboards were sorely missed. To help fill in these gaps, Steinman recommended the services of Eric Troyer - a seasoned session vocalist who'd worked with the likes of Aerosmith, Bonnie Tyler, Meat Loaf, Gene Simmons, Julian Lennon, and John Lennon, who'd dubbed ELO "sons of Beatles" some 16 years prior by that point. Eric quickly fit in with the band, providing the group a trio of demos to be worked into the new album. Between Troyer's starry-eyed melodramatics inspired by his mentor and Bevan & Haycock's more rough-edged rock, the direction of the remainder of the album became clear. Later in production, Meat Loaf approached Jim Steinman after the pair had spent much of the prior decade arguing and suing each other, with an offer to patch things over and finally record a follow-up to "Bat Out Of Hell". Steinman, who'd still felt unsatisfied with the failure to record 'Bat II' and the circumstances around "Bad For Good", quickly agreed and departed the ELO sessions to focus solely on the project - allegedly taking "I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won't Do That)" from ELO Part II to become the lead single for 'Bat II'. As a small token, however, he donated a demo of obscure Steinberg-Kelly power-pop track "Kiss Me Red", recently covered by Move-admirers Cheap Trick. Part II would also record this for the album, now under the production guidance of Jeff Glixman of Kansas fame, whom Bevan had met during his brief time recording for Black Sabbath's "The Eternal Idol".
