NYSD Superintendent Updates - February 2023

To Fanwood Parents and Families: Welcome to the second semester and welcome to Black History Month 2023! Fanwood proudly celebrates Black History this month. Did you know that Fanwood was the first Deaf school to accept Black students? We accepted Horace Crawford in 1818 and Sally Robinson in 1819. Fanwood publicly allowed it to be known that we accepted Black students. We are proud of our history of equity and diversity. You can read more about our rich history in the book Words Made Flesh by R. A. R. Edwards. We will host several events this month, including an assembly next week and read-alouds of related books by our SBG officers to our Elementary students. Please watch our social media for photos of our celebrations! We also have some exciting news to share. Fanwood has just received a $2 million dollar grant from the office of Senator Andrea Stewart Cousins to build a new Track and Field on Fanwood campus. Our goal is to break ground on this work in the coming months and celebrate a new track with parents and families in the Fall 2023. We are excited to provide even better facilities for our students, and grateful to Senator Cousins for her ongoing support of Fanwood. We are excited to learn about students being accepted to colleges. Recently, three of our Seniors earned scholarships to RIT/NTID - Leah Feliciano, Terrell Demorcy and Manuel Perez. Also, Mariel Rodriguez was accepted into their Associate Degree program. Congratulations to these four students. You inspire me! I can’t wait to learn about the amazing things in your future. We are also excited about our ESDAA tournament! Approximately 200 students from 9 schools will be coming to Fanwood; on February 17th, 18th and 19th our campus will become a small city. We are working to bring back our parent organization, and will be asking you to join so we can work together to bring great things to Fanwood.
