The sounds of dawn in the rainforests of Costa Rica. This is a soundscape I recorded in the lowland rainforests of Costa Rica, in Corcovado NP. This is one of the most pristine areas in Costa Rica, and the country's largest protected area. There is incredible biodiversity and abundant wildlife in the park, with numerous rare species calling this place home. I was lucky to spend more than a week in the area in late 2021 and I managed to capture some truly magnificent recordings. While most recordings from Corcovado are nice and lovely to listen to, this one has a special ingredient! It might not be immediately apparent but there is a constant hum throughout, which emanated from a large beehive nearby. The bees were audible when I set up the rigs but it was quite low level. Listening back to the recordings I noticed there are bumps in their activity levels at dawn and dusk. I've often asked myself what makes a recording better for study or focus. Soft birdsong and constant sounds like rain and water flowing are clearly relaxing. Soft wind in foliage might have a calming effect too. Bees buzzing away sound nice on the surface, but I'm sure some of our ancestors deep in our species history had some unpleasant encounters with bees (and other buzzing, stinging insects). I would expect this sound would cause an interesting effect on our brains. On the one hand, beehives are home to sweet honey, and sugars were much less readily available before we started to extract and concentrate it industrially. An early human would find this very enticing. On the other hand though, beehives are (usually) home to stinging bees. This will definitely cause some adrenalin to be released in our pre-modern physiology. An interesting mix of excitement and anxiety, now that might be the way to facilitate focus with a soundscape! My question now is, what does this make you feel? Is it relaxing? Does it make you want to run away? Do you feel like you suddenly want to climb a tree and look for a treat? Let me know in the comments please, and enjoy the sounds. Recorded on the Osa Peninsula with Sony PCM A10 and Lom mikroUsi microphones. Enjoying the videos I upload on here?
