Every bee keeper should learn how to split a hive at some point in their bee keeping journey. I have been keeping bees for 4 years now, and this was my first ever hive split which all started from a rookie error when I accidentally moved the queen up into the super during an inspection. I noticed this completely changed the temperament of the colony making them very agro like they were queenless, so when I didn’t see any new young egg or much brood in the brood box I assumed the colony lost their queen, so I ordered a new one to be express posted asap. Before receiving the queen I was advised to throughly check the hive for any queen cells, which is when I found her and rectified the issue, so decided to take advantage of my mistake and learn how to do my first split. As you will watch in the video after 2 failed attempts on receiving posted queens, I continued to advantage of the situation and create 2 splits from swarm cells. I hope you enjoy seeing how unpredictable bee keeping can be, we all make mistakes, and learning new skills can come from it. I hope this helps other rookie bee keepers like myself to also have a go at doing your first split if you have never done one. Generally spring or mid summer is the best time to do this, and this technique is usually done to prevent a colony from swarming. Happy bee keeping folks ✌🏼 Chris If you haven’t already started following our page @LittleZephyrFarm I would love to connect with you, and share more on what I’m getting up to on our farm.
