A lot of people don't actually know the difference between proprietary trading and market making. Many students and applicants apply to investment bank trading roles thinking they'll do traditional 'trading' i.e. proprietary trading when in actual fact investment banks mainly provide market making services on their trading floors. The key difference between the two is as follows: in market making you're providing liquidity to the market i.e. buying and selling financial securities whenever a client needs you to do so. By providing liquidity to your clients, you get to charge a small fee from the transaction and that's how you make money. In contrast, when you're proprietary trading you're taking a bet on the direction of a financial security (either by buying in hopes that the prices goes up, or selling hoping that the price of the security falls) in order to profit from the difference in price between the time of buying and selling.
