A group of civilians evacuate the Azovstal steelworks, the last location in Mariupol being held by Ukrainian forces and where officials said around 200 civilians and 500 injured Ukrainian military personnel remain. Footage released by the Azov Battalion on May 3 shows men, women, and children being bussed out of the plant and met with Red Cross teams. Azov said it rescued about a hundred citizens from the plant the day before the evacuation to the safe area controlled by the Ukrainian authorities. The regiment said people were still “under the rubble in the basements on the territory of the plant.” On Tuesday, the deputy head of the regiment Captain Sviatoslav Palamar made an appeal for hundreds of civilians and injured soldiers to be evacuated from the steelworks amid renewed Russian attacks that he said killed and injured 12 people. Palamar said two women were killed overnight in shelling at the sprawling plant and that Russian forces launched a massive new offensive. Russian media and Ukrainian officials said earlier that fighting had resumed around Azovstal, with Mariupol police chief Mykhailo Vershynin saying that Russian forces tried to storm the steelworks. Ukrainian officials said 156 evacuees from Mariupol arrived in Zaporizhzhia on Tuesday, May 3, but said several hundred more were still sheltering at Mariupol’s Azovstal steel plant — the last holdout of Ukrainian forces in the city.
