If you are new to open water swimming or considering trying open water swimming, or even cold water swimming- please watch this video for some tips. After three years of open water swimming, three times a week in the summer and winter- I would like to share my DO's and DON'Ts. Summary: Warming up before entering the water is beneficial DO some core temperature raising exercises, like staircase running, lunges, push ups, burpees...etc. Have a swim buddy or at least somebody nearby on land (if you are starting out- don't go too far from the shore, play it safe) DON'T over do it, at first keep your time in the water short, gradually extend your time (if you are in the cold water for a "long time" and feeling happy you might feel the first onset of hypothermia...be careful as the next stage might be confusion) When you finish your swim, DO get changed into dry clothing (perhaps a couple extra layers) to warm up your body gradually DO some light exercises if you need to warm up quicker, and/or have a hot drink (perhaps a hot chocolate) You might experience a shiver, cold feeling coming on about 10-15 minutes after you leave the water (that's normal and called after drop) Again, dry clothing, exercise, and/or a hot drink will reduce the extent of the after drop DON'T jump into a hot bath- DON'T jump into a hot bath: this hot water will encapsulate your body and the cold will not leave your core. Be careful don't pass out in your own bathtub.
