Hey Dave here with Half Dozen Customs. If the air compressor isn't working, not much work can get done around the shop. In the eighth part of this project, Dave started by discussing some research he did overnight on the check valve. He discovered that the check valve unit can be taken apart and cleaned, so he decided to do that. He also planned to pull the heads and check the piston rings to make sure they are staggered properly, as he couldn't remember how they were aligned during the last reassembly. While the heads were off, he decided to hone the cylinders again. Dave removed the check valve and cleaned the various valves inside to remove any gunk and check for signs of leaks. He removed a clip from the bottom of the check valve and dropped the plunger down. It was cracked, which turned out to be the source of the air leakage. Dave decided to cut apart one of the incorrect pieces to see if he could use any parts from it to replace the cracked one. It looked like it would work, so he reassembled the check valve and installed it on the air compressor. Next, Dave moved on to the pump and removed the head again. Upon inspecting the piston rings, he realized he made a mistake—the rings were too close together. He needed to offset them better before reassembling the head. Dave applied some compressor oil to the honing tool and the cylinder walls, then ran the honing tool through both cylinders. He also adjusted the rings to ensure they were properly offset this time. While waiting for Colleen to help reattach the head, Dave showed her the ring tool he had gotten specifically for this project. When Colleen arrived, she helped Dave by holding the clamps while he slid the head back on, which turned out to be much easier than expected. With the head back on, Dave torqued it to the specifications listed in the instructions, following the recommended sequence. He then continued reassembling the top half of the pump. Once everything was back together, Dave moved the compressor back into position to test it before reassembling the cover. He flipped the switch, and the compressor filled up completely and shut itself off. There didn’t appear to be any leaks—fingers crossed that this fixed the issue. Interestingly, the pump filled up to 20 psi higher than before, so Dave planned to do some research on this. After taking a break, Dave returned to find a small leak coming from the pressure switch. The diaphragm on the bottom was leaking, so Dave would need to replace it. This could also be the cause of the higher psi. He tightened everything connected to the pressure switch and adjusted the pressure while he was there. After a few adjustments and tests, Dave managed to set the pressure correctly. It was time to put the cage back on and slide the compressor back into its home. The compressor was still spitting a little oil but was holding air. Thanks for watching!
