Also the man known as "Chemical Ali" has been sentenced to death for chemical attacks that killed tens of thousands of Kurds. (June 24) ---------------------------------------- [Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] It has been a terribly bloody week for U-S troops in Iraq. At least 31 American soldiers have been killed since last weekend...many by roadside bombs. The battle has been particularly intense in Baqouba, Iraq where soldiers along with Iraqi police are going door-to-door in an effort to clear al-Qaida from the area. SOT: "It is house to house, block to block, street to street, tunnel to tunnel, utility locations, basements, rooftops, any structure that is in these built up areas we'll be clearing." ((Brigadier General Mick Bednarek/ 25th Infantry Division)) Meantime an Iraqi court has sentenced the man known as "Chemical Ali" to death by hanging. Ali Hassan al-Majid (ah-LEE' hah-SAHN' ahl mah-ZHEED') was convicted of ordering the use of chemical weapons after a crackdown in the 1980's that killed 180-thousand Kurds in northern Iraq. al-Majid is Saddam Hussein's cousin. The court also convicted and sentenced two others in Saddam's regime...the former defense minister and the former deputy director of operations for Iraq's armed forces.
