Today's special program comes off a recorded Betamax tape of 1983 Iditarod coverage as aired on the “Iditarod Race Network” via KTVA 11 in Anchorage and KTVF 11 in Fairbanks. We're thinking this was recorded in Beta III speed, since there's about 4 ½ hours of recorded content. There are defects present, like tearing at the top, head unalignment, image destabilization, ghosting and static, but overall the tape was recorded in fair-ish quality. Considering the cost of a Betamax player and tapes in 1983, it’s very fortunate someone followed the race this closely and recorded this much coverage. We have not been able to find these programs online, aside from a commentary and interview tape • Iditarod 1983 (KSKO audio recap) . This is the first Alaska Betamax tape we have digitized, we do not see Alaska-recorded beta tapes very often, if at all. We hope you’ll enjoy this compilation (with some original commercial breaks) in anticipation of Iditarod 2026 starting next week! If you’re interested in a full list of the year’s participants, the Iditarod website has archived race results https://iditarod.com/race/1983/. The year’s winner was the late Rick Mackey, who passed away in 2024, https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/... . He was followed by the late Eep Anderson, who had won the GCI Dorothy G. Page Halfway Award in this race https://craigmedred.news/2018/04/22/i... A note about this race in particular, this is the first time the “First Musher to the Yukon” award was given, which included a “five-course, gourmet dinner prepared at the checkpoint prepared by executive chefs from top chefs at local Alaskan restaurants.” Larry “Cowboy” Smith won the dinner and adjoining press conference. This was also the first time the race had it’s start in Anchorage, a tradition that lives on to today. Moreover at the time this race was considered one with a substantial entry presence by women, including familiar faces such as Susan Butcher, Connie Frerichs, and Pam Flowers. The tape starts with coverage of the ceremonial opening in Anchorage and gives brief bios of some of the mushers and their dog teams before they set off. There's a trail update followed by the first musher over the finish line in Nome. Both of these programs are about 2 ½ hours. If you are looking for documentary style coverage post-race, wait for the “Iditarod ‘83 Presentation” at about 7:40pm. It combines all of the footage the network gathered during the race and musher interviews. Since the tape jumps around alot, here's a rough breakdown of what's on the recording and when it should be on tonight: 5:05pm - 7:27pm: First Ceremonial Start in Anchorage. 7:27pm - 7:32pm: Trail Update near Unalakleet with Race Leader Interviews 7:32pm - 7:43pm: Race End in Nome 7:43pm - 8:28pm: Iditarod ‘83 Presentation 8:28pm - 8:34pm: Interview with Winner Rick Mackey 8:34pm - 9:31pm: KTUU Iditarod ‘83 (Viewer discretion is advised. There are some sensitive scenes with dogs. Also image quality is the most poor in this section.)
