In regions marked by instability and conflict, like North-Eastern Nigeria, the challenges of providing security and social welfare are immense. The Satellite Imagery for Social Good project, a multi-regional initiative spearheaded by the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) in partnership with Microsoft, was launched to address these challenges head-on. This project leverages cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies to enhance remote mapping and validation, focusing on building footprints and road networks in the fragile environments of Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, and Yobe states. The primary goal of this initiative was to support humanitarian and government actors in these states by providing them with the geospatial data they need to improve the lives of communities affected by insurgencies, kidnappings, and arson activities. Through the project, over 1.8 million building footprints and 25,731 square kilometers of roads were mapped and added to the OpenStreetMap platform. This extensive dataset is now a critical resource for local governments, development actors, and humanitarian organizations working to promote security and social welfare. The project’s implementation was a collaborative effort involving local partners and key stakeholders across the four states. Ground-truthing activities ensured the accuracy of the data, and the involvement of local communities provided invaluable insights into the region’s unique challenges. In total, 21 mapping projects were completed, with 85% of the tasks validated, demonstrating the project’s commitment to data quality and reliability. One of the significant achievements of the Satellite Imagery for Social Good project was the creation and distribution of 20 detailed maps of Local Government Areas throughout Bauchi State. These maps, along with flash drives containing open-source software, PDF maps, and training materials, were provided to 35 stakeholders during a three-day capacity-building workshop. These resources are now being used to support a wide range of initiatives, from healthcare immunization programs to child protection and broader community engagement efforts. The success of this project is a testament to the power of technology and collaboration in addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges. By integrating AI and ML with local knowledge and expertise, the Satellite Imagery for Social Good project has not only provided critical data but also empowered local communities and stakeholders to take control of their futures. This initiative is more than just a mapping project; it is a vital tool for building resilience and fostering sustainable development in regions where stability is desperately needed.
