Distressing and hand scraping new wood so that the wood looks antique is quite straight forward. Nothing beats a subtly hand scraped hardwood floor or furniture for artistic effect: sorry, machine scraped floors lake the randomness of a legit handscrape and the powers that be in the factories always seem to overdue the effect. Less is always more. If you have access to labour or have endless muscles and energy here is what to do: Supplies: 1. various paint scrapers 2. a fine flat file 3. lots of replacement blades 4. steel wool 5. Vinegar 6. 80 grit sand paper 7. Vaccum with soft bristle head designed for hardwood floors 8. black shoe polish or asphalt (mix into either hardwax oil and/or wax 8. Shellac 9. paint brush 10. hardwax oil (I have used Woca, Eukula, Osmowax, rubio monocoat 11. cotton rags 12. Paste, or liquid wood wax 13. circular buffing machine • How to Clean hardwood floors 14. 16 inch steel wool pad for buffing machines What to do (assuming you are working with freshly laid 3/4 inch hardwood flooring) 1. Rent a drum sander and edger to flatten off the over wood so that you are working with a flat surface (or if you installed engineered raw wood it will start out flat enough) 2. Distress your floor as randomly as possible by beating it with hammers, heavy chains, bowling balls. What you are doing is creating a depression in the wood grain that will come out later. 3. in a large bucket, fill a large bucket with a measured and recorded amount of regular vinegar 4. put a measured and recorded amount of regular steel wool pads into the vinegar. 5. Let dissolve for a measured and recorded amount of time. White oak has a relatively high amount of tannic acid that reacts quickly with the solution; however, other woods like butternut require a higher concentration of steel wool:vinegar that has been dissolved overnight to get the same reaction. 6. evenly wipe the solution on to the distressed hardwood floor. Wait until it turns black. This will take a varying amount of time depending on the wood species. 7. Get to work and start scraping of the black/brown/purple parts layer on the wood. No matter how hard you try, you will not be able to make the floor perfectly flat: this is what you want! Once the floor is oiled and waxed, light will bounce off the undulations in way that will set this floor apart from any factory scraped floor. Trust me. 8. If you hand scraped across the grain, it will show different than scraping with the grain. I prefer to keep this to a minimum since it tends to look very contrived. 9. If you are using multiple people, make sure they scrape one line them move to any section of the floor. This is because everyone scrapes different and you want everything to look random. 10. sweep up all the wood shaving 11. hand sand each board, going with the grain, until smooth and uniform. 12 vacuum the whole floor 13. If you wish to use shellac, mix up the shellac (sample the different colours - usually clear, orange, or amber) and evenly apply in sections using a paint brush. I recommend taping off small sections along the grain so that you don't have to worry about. Once complete and dry, hand sand the raised grain with a fine sanding sponge . Repeat the application of shellac and hand sand again after it is dry. 14. Shellac is not appropriate as a finish coat, so make the protective layer with either a hardwax oil, or a liquid or paste wax. 15. You can add shoe polish, oil stain, or asphalt into the hardwax oil or various waxes to give a desired effect. 16. When using hardwax oils, evenly apply with cotton rags(please handle safely, they absolutely will set on fire if you leave balled up and unattended!!!!!!), then evenly polish the floor with a white pad on a circular buffing machine to ensure it is finished evenly. Only add one or two layers of oil and let it cure for about a week before cleaning. • Видео 17. If you are using wax, apply by hand and allow the wax to dry for an hour or two. Then buff the floor with a steel wool pad or a whitepad (please see other videos for this). Come back the next day and buff with fine steel wool pad on a buffing machine to help harden the wax. Keep repeating the wax application process as many times as you wish until you get a look that you love. Let the floor cure for about a week. If you do decide to wax the floor, i think this looks the best, make sure you are prepared to purchase a the buffing machine so that you can regularly polish the floor and reapply layers of wax over the years. This is the best way to maintain your floor and have its looks improve with age.
