--------------- This is such a brilliant book mixing high-stakes adventure with the nuanced themes of power and responsibility and stereotyping. We have to work a little harder for our answers, following the text's flow and finding clues in the choice of words 'second hand 'finished with' 'the trouble was.' This sounds very much like Omri's tone of voice - the back and forth, qualifying and veiled resentment. As the time of present giving and receiving is upon us...we wonder about times we have received second-hand gifts that we have wanted and those we have loathed. There's nothing wrong with a second-hand gift but a gift does need to show the thought behind it! Welcome to the Official YouTube Channel of Thinking Readers 📖 Subscribe to Thinking Readers here: / @thinkingreaders ➡️ Thinking Readers is a video podcast for primary-aged children, designed to develop their critical thinking skills and love of reading. We model and practise the reading skills children need to figure out meaning from texts for themselves and this makes reading so much more enjoyable and gets them top grades and success with entrance exams. We do longer read-alouds and shorter drill-down sessions in which we analyse the text and consider our reader response. We look at a wide range of books from classics to contemporary and examine different genres and different levels of complexity. This wide exposure shows children the wealth of stories available to them and encourages them to find the stories they love. The sessions are low-stakes, encouraging yet challenging; they're good for families to watch together and discuss and also for children to watch alone. Children are encouraged to think for themselves and support their ideas with evidence. We avoid canonised thinking: there are no wrong answers, but well-considered and justified ones. As the content is for kids, comments are switched off.
