Mr. President: Hamas is not listening to your threats (Jewish News Syndicate) Hamas refuses to commit to disarming, aims to keep grip on Gaza security - senior official (Jerusalem Post) Headline 1 Mr. President: Hamas is not listening to your threats (Jewish News Syndicate) The terrorists' brazen post-ceasefire crackdown on rivals and dissidents mocks Trump’s promise to disarm them and shows they believe that they’re not going anywhere. Opinion Returning to Washington after his triumphant visit to Jerusalem to address the Knesset ... Trump made it clear that he wasn’t going to let the terrorists get away with reneging on the next steps to implement the accord. Speaking at the White House on Tuesday, Trump stated that his “people” were told by Hamas that they would disarm, as is called for in the Israel-Hamas peace plan he put together with mediation from key Arab leaders. ‘We will disarm them’ That’s exactly what supporters of Israel, plus those who have been worrying about what will follow the liberation of the hostages, wanted to hear. That was especially needed after it was reported that Trump administration officials were downplaying Hamas activity in Gaza these past few days as not violating the deal. They didn’t say ‘yes’ to surrender Yet their most recent success also hinged on their willingness to liberally interpret Hamas’s response to Trump’s terms for ending the Gaza war. In a crucial White House meeting with Netanyahu, Trump insisted on the Israelis agreeing to all 20 points. That included both the ones that were clearly in line with the Jewish state’s war goals on the hostages and the surrender of Hamas, as well as the ones about which they were skeptical. The Netanyahu government took a dim view of the points about mythical non-political Palestinian Arab technocrats running postwar Gaza. They are equally leery about the creation of an international body that would supervise the reform of the corrupt Palestinian Authority, in addition to the Strip’s rebuilding and a peaceful transition to what might eventually become a path to statehood. But at Trump’s insistence-and with him bluntly telling them their international isolation was a problem they needed to address-Netanyahu gave an enthusiastic “yes” to all of it. But despite what Trump is saying, that wasn’t Hamas’s response. Their answer to his demands was “yes, but … ,” not a blanket agreement. ... With its current behavior—making no secret of its reasserting control over every inch of Gaza evacuated by Israel—Hamas is sending a loud message back to Trump. And it clearly says that they neither care about nor believe his threats. No right-thinking person believed that Hamas was just going to give up. And that’s the problem...they plan on staying in power. Look for them to drag out any negotiations that are conducted, if there are any, that is. What does Israel do? Again, there are no “good answers.” Headline 2 Hamas refuses to commit to disarming, aims to keep grip on Gaza security - senior official (Jerusalem Post) Hamas intends to maintain security control in Gaza during an interim period, a senior Hamas official told Reuters, adding he could not commit to the group disarming - positions that reflect the difficulties facing US plans to secure an end to the war. Hamas politburo member Mohammed Nazzal also said the group was ready for a ceasefire of up to five years to rebuild devastated Gaza, with guarantees for what happens afterwards depending on Palestinians being given "horizons and hope" for statehood. ....Asked if Hamas would give up its arms, Nazzal, speaking on Wednesday, said: "I can't answer with a yes or no. Frankly, it depends on the nature of the project. The disarmament project you're talking about, what does it mean? To whom will the weapons be handed over?" He added that issues to be discussed in the next phase of negotiations, including weapons, concerned not only Hamas but other armed Palestinian groups, and would require Palestinians more broadly to reach a position. ..."The Palestinian people want an independent Palestinian state," he added. No, they don’t ... they want only one state... Palestine...so, again we ask the question, what is Israel and the U.S. going to do? How long do they wait as Hamas is digging in, assuming that they won’t have to disarm and not planning to go anywhere. It does seem that they assume that Trump is bluffing by his threats.
