Donnington Castle, located just north of Newbury, is a striking medieval ruin best known for its powerful gatehouse. Built in 1386 by Sir Richard Abberbury the Elder, a knight in the service of King Richard II, the castle was designed as a fortified residence rather than a large military fortress. Its impressive twin-towered gatehouse, thick walls, and commanding hilltop position made it both a symbol of status and a strong defensive structure overlooking the surrounding countryside. The castle played a crucial role during the English Civil War, when it was held by Royalist forces loyal to King Charles I. It endured repeated sieges between 1643 and 1646, withstanding heavy bombardment before finally surrendering. Afterward, Parliament ordered the castle to be deliberately damaged to prevent further military use, leaving the dramatic ruins seen today. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Consider Supporting us on: 📌 Youtube Memberships: / @pinnedonplaces 📌 Instagram: / pinnedonplaces 📌 Website: https://www.pinnedonplaces.com 📌 Patreon: / pinnedonplaces --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Music Credit(s): 📌 Epidemic Sound 📌 Like the music?
