Made from Black Walnut & Curly Birch. The walnut parts get a tung oil finish, applied after assembly. When dry the entire project is finished with a coat of matt lacquer, lightly buffed with 0000 steel wool, followed by one or two more coats of matt lacquer. Leather ears are cut and glued after the finish has been applied. A bit about the production process: Curly Birch is knowingly gnarly and after giving it a attempt shaping the Birch entirely on the lathe it soon became clear that my current turning tools are not up for the job. They aren’t beefy enough and therefore vibration chattered the surface beyond repair. As the discs that make up the body consists of three different sizes, I could get around this problem using hole saws and so I did. This was a pleasing alternative but still left to much of a ruff surface for hand sanding only, so I take it to the belt sander before finally sanding through several grids on the lathe. For the legs I decide to also take the easy route and use plug/ tenon cutters to ruff the legs into uniform shape out of one block of Walnut to then further refine them on the lathe.
