On what would have been Breonna Taylor’s 27th birthday, a reading of some of the names of those killed by law enforcement. At least seven other people have been killed by law enforcement since Breonna was killed by Louisville police on March 13 -- including George Floyd, who was killed by officers in Minneapolis on May 25. This is a reading of names in eight minutes and 46 seconds, the time Officer Derek Chauvin knelt into George Floyd's neck, choking off his air supply. Even after, Floyd, an unarmed black man, became unresponsive, the white officer kept his knee in his neck for another two minutes and 53 seconds, eventually killing him. Please note: In 8 minutes and 53 seconds, I read 138 names of people killed by law enforcement going back from May 2020 into the year 2019. Those named ranged in age from 14 to 65 and shootings occurred from DeRidder, Louisiana to Flint, Michigan. This is not a complete list from that time, nor was I able in the time allotted to finish reading the names of those killed in 2019 from my partial list. Black Americans are more than twice as likely to be shot and killed by officers than white Americans. (This particular list does not include the results of investigations or imply culpability for individual incidents.) Of the 7,666 law enforcement killings noted between 2013 and 2019, charges were brought less than 100 times, with 25 resulting convictions. Chauvin, who has been charged with third-degree murder, was involved in the shootings of three other men of color: Wayne Reyes, a Latino man was shot dead from multiple bullet wounds in 2006; Ira Latrell Toles, a black man was shot by Chauvin in his own bathroom in 2008; and Leroy Martinez, an Alaskan Native American man was shot in the torso in 2011. Chauvin was also involved in the deaths of three other people during a car chase in 2005. Over the years, 17 complaints were filed against Chauvin with all but one closed without discipline, according to city records.
