Laurence Anyways was an audience favourite at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival but before it had made its way to English-language audiences in Canada it had already been very successfully received at Cannes and been embraced by Quebec. Xavier Dolan is more then a darling of Canadian cinema, at the tender age of twenty three he borders on cinematic savant. At three hours long, Laurence Anyways is simply more to love of Dolan's signature brand of bravado and heartfelt emotion. Nobody explores relationships better then Dolan who has his leading man, Laurence declare he wants to become a woman. Liberation shouldn't be a problem but it deeply complicates a committed relationship he has with a woman named Fred, exquisitely played by Suzanne Clement. Fred fell in love with Laurence as a man, and in a decade long relationship that echoes The Way We Were, we see two people very much in love who can't find a way to be together. Press+1's THE CANADIAN FILM REVIEW had the opportunity to sit down with Suzanne Clement, during TIFF and just after her win in Cannes for best actress, to talk about her character, her emotional scene in the film and what makes Quebec cinema so fantastic. The CANADIAN FILM REVIEW heads to ROGERS TV in Toronto this November and Laurence Anyways heads to cinemas on the English side of Canada this September 21st. Don't wait for this movie on VOD, you will want to see it on the big screen!
