Two hours outside of La Paz, Bolivia lies the North Yungas Road. Built in the 1930s by Paraguayan prisoners, this road connects La Paz with the town of Coroicos. It stems from the high Andes and down into the lower Amazonian region, with several microclimates on the descent down. The road is carved into the sides of steep mountains, featuring precipitous drops of up to 610 meters (2,000 feet) or more. Many sections are incredibly narrow, sometimes less than 3 meters (9.8 feet) wide, barely allowing a single vehicle to pass. There are many hairpin turns and, for much of its length, the road lacks guardrails - making any miscalculation potentially fatal. The surface is often unpaved, consisting of loose gravel and rocks, which can easily cause vehicles or bicycles to lose traction. I took a tour of this unique region and got on a mountain bike to ride the entirety of this road with a guide and learn about the history and challenges of the North Yungas Road. #LeoDoesLife #Bolivia #DeathRoad
