‪@FoundationMatters‬ Did Jesus really perform miracles? When we examine the eye witness testimonies of the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), we discover that Jesus performed many miracles. In recent years, magicians have tried to recreate some of the miracles of Jesus - these grand scale illusions have needed incredible skill and a huge budget! However, when we read the gospel accounts, Jesus didn’t need money for props. He often just spoke a word! The gospels record Jesus performing many miracles in public. He healed the sick, he made the blind to see, the lame to walk and the mute to speak. It is clear that Jesus never did miracles for His own interest or benefit. For example, when starving in the wilderness he would not turn the stones around him into bread for himself to eat, but on another occasion when filled with compassion for the hungry crowd he multiplied fish and bread for them to eat until they were full! Jesus performed miracles to meet real human needs. Many of Jesus’ miracles also showed that he had power over nature. He was able to calm a fierce storm by just speaking. He walked on top of water and He even brought dead people back to life again! Now it is clear that ordinary people like you and me do not have the power to do these kinds of things. This is why Christians believe that Jesus was more than just a man – he was (and still is) the Son of God. The Bible says that Jesus was there at the beginning of the universe – He created it – and so it is not really a surprise that he has control over it because he brought it into existence. The Bible tells us that even the enemies of Jesus, who were desperate to find fault with him, could not deny that He was able to perform these miracles. They witnessed them with their own eyes. But instead of believing that he was Son of God, they chose to to believe that he was performing these miracles with the power of Satan, the devil (Matthew 12:22-24). So I guess the real question is not ‘did’ Jesus perform miracles, but ‘why’ did Jesus perform miracles? What was their purpose? The miracles of Jesus were signposts to show the people at that time who He was. The jewish nation were looking for their Messiah, promised all the way through the Old Testament. They knew that this Messiah would come doing miracles. 700 years before Jesus was born the prophet Isaiah wrote that when the Messiah comes … ‘the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.’ The miracles Jesus performed were there to prove that He was the Son of God, this promised one (Messiah). For only God can do the things that Jesus did. The Bible says that “nothing is impossible with God.” Did Jesus really perform miracles? That’s for you to decide.
