The sounds of the African bush at dawn - Nature soundscapes

Listen to the beautiful sounds of the African bush in the morning. This small riverbed becomes very noisy and chaotic as night turns into day. A lot of birds and bird species call this place home and they have to tell potential interlopers that they are not welcome here. Their message needs to be heard far and wide, and song is the best way to broadcast it. Add to that the piercing insect chorus and the occasional mammal sounds, and the place comes alive with sound. As a sound recordist this is an excellent place to record and to document. Wherever I will place the microphones, I am bound to end up recording something busy and lively. There is a problem though. Real life is rarely well balanced and mixed properly. The only thing wildlife species think about is getting their message across, even if that means masking other creatures' calls or creating some weird resonances. This means I have to spend considerable time on location in the field, just listening. To some recordists this might seem like wasted time, but to me this is integral to my practice. There are minuscule differences in the landscape that can drastically alter the recording. The variations are endless so categorising and cataloguing them is out of the question. This, more than anything else, is an area where I rely on my ears and my gut feel. Soundscape recording is not about the technical aspects, but rather about what other humans will feel when listening to my work.
