One of the issues that major religions have with nonduality, including Islam, is that they feel it is arrogant to say that God and man are One. Most religions feel God is an unknowable, separate and distinct entity from the world, while nonduality believes God is both unknowable and knowable. God is known in the qualities of peace, love, compassion, mercy, wisdom, and other qualities mentioned as the 99 names of God in the Quran. Nonduality believes that as creations of God, we come out of God and return to God, and therefore we are a part of God and have access to peace, love, and joy that is beyond human understanding if we learn to practice in a certain way. This is incredible news in a world riddled with anxiety, depression, and disconnection from oneself and others. I talk with Hasan Al-Saidy about his experience growing up Muslim and finding himself inspired by nonduality in adulthood. I am struck by his acceptance, even in the face of resistance to new ideas in religious community and a recent war that has ravaged the lives of thousands.
