Today we are exploring and analyzing in-depth the historical tapestry woven by maestro Ken Russell in his 1971 film, The Devils. We’ll go over the 1634 “demonic possessions” of Loudun, various literary and filmic adaptations leading up to Russell’s work, the subsequent critical fallout upon its release, and what takeaways we can pull from all this in the modern day. Is this film forever doomed to share a fate similar to that of the lecherous priest in Urbain Grandier? For further reading, I highly recommend Aldous Huxley’s The Devils of Loudun, one of, if not THE best historical narrative analyses of the Loudun possessions, as well as Richard Crouse’s “Raising Hell: Ken Russell and the Unmaking of The Devils”, for a deep guide to the making of this film and problems with its release and distribution. For further viewing, Hell on Earth: The Desecration and Resurrection of ‘The Devils’ is the best documentary you’ll find on the subject, though the viewing of any content by preeminent Devils scholar, Mark Kermode, will also do. Most importantly, try to find a way in which to watch this film, you won’t regret it!
