Who you are and who you ultimately become is shaped by what you believe and where you direct your attention. The ideas you hold about yourself influence the choices you make and the actions you repeat each day. As Aristotle observed, “You are what you repeatedly do,” reminding us that our habits ultimately define us. Yet the habits we form are guided by our beliefs about what is possible. When students believe their abilities can grow through effort, practice, and learning, they are more likely to persist through challenges and improve over time (a concept known as a growth mindset). For educators, helping students truly believe this is something of a “holy grail.” When students internalize a growth mindset, they become more resilient, more willing to take risks, and better prepared to turn setbacks into opportunities for learning and growth. Charlton Jackson is the Middle School Principal at Chadwick International, a role he has held since 2020. A lifelong member of the Chadwick community, he attended Chadwick School from kindergarten through grade 12 (1975–1988). He later returned as a faculty member, serving for 21 years as a math teacher, as well as coaching middle and high school basketball and middle school flag football. During his time at Chadwick School (1999–2020), he also served 16 years as Middle School Assistant Director and four years as Middle School Director. Charlton is also a proud Chadwick parent—his daughter Maya graduated in 2016 and his son CJ in 2020. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
