Tip-29; Focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH) of the liver is a benign “regenerative” mass lesion of the liver that occurs as a result of localized vascular abnormalities. It usually occurs in young women but can be seen in men and in children as well. FNH is often discovered incidentally. It is important to remember that the background liver is usually normal and does not show cirrhosis and this is an important clue to the diagnosis. Microscopically, there are nodules composed of benign-looking hepatocytes, sometimes with cholestasis in periseptal hepatocytes, arranged in plates no more than 2 cells in thickness, with fibrosis containing large dystrophic vessels. There is ductular proliferation and inflammation in the fibrous scar, but no ducts. Masson trichrome special staining can be of help, especially if you pay attention to the abnormal vessels.
