Nils Asmussen (Barkhausen Institut) Slides: https://summit.riot-os.org/2025/wp-co... --- The increasing software and hardware complexity of modern devices, particularly in security-critical domains such as public infrastructure and medical devices, poses significant challenges to ensuring their trustworthiness. To address this issue, we propose M³, a hardware/operating system co-design that aims to reduce system complexity. M³ builds upon the microkernel technology and introduces a new hardware component that acts as an abstraction and isolation layer. In this way, we can securely integrate untrusted hardware components and at the same time provide a common interface that reduces the overall system complexity. In this talk, I will provide an overview of the M³ system architecture and outline our current research activities. --- Nils Asmussen received his Ph.D. at Technische Universität Dresden under Prof. Hermann Härtig. Nils introduced the M³ architecture with his Ph.D. thesis, which initially focussed on heterogeneous systems. Since 2019 he works as a principal researcher at the Barkhausen Institut in Dresden where the work on the M³ system architecture is continued based on a larger team of OS and hardware researchers. His research interests include the boundary between hardware and software, programming languages, and microkernel-based systems. --- https://summit.riot-os.org
