VLOG: Makanda (Grahamstown), South Africa's City Of Festivals! Where Everything Was Closed...

Graduating from a film university meant that we were well aware of the National Arts Festival that captures the attention of this town every year. We would watch as our friends and fellow arts & culture students spent hours prepping to come down and perform. However, this time would be different. It would be virtual. No performers bustling up and down the streets excitedly, no bars and restaurants filled with people and joyous laughter; we had just got the go-ahead to travel again after the pandemic and this was about to be a rediscovery. A chance to explore this quiet and sleepy town on its own, as a new sense of normalcy begins to settle in again. We watched the boarding school students line up at the admissions office, we watched students getting dropped off and parent-child embraces were the order of the day. We could see a contrast of buildings in the landscape before us. An old stone church maybe 60 feet high, modern apartment blocks, victorian-style houses. A new adventure. A new experience of Makhanda.
