One of the largest theropod dinosaurs ever known, Carcharodontosaurus is recognizable for its teeth, which strongly resemble the teeth of a great white shark. A close relative of both Acrocanthosaurus of North America and Giganotosaurus of South America, Carcharodontosaurus is distinguished by its three-fingered hands, elongated snout, and an assortment of spikes located along its back and head. In comparison to Giganotosaurus, Carcharodontosaurus (while similar in build) was a little smaller and had a narrower profile with a snout that tapers to a point. Its huge jaws are equipped with long, serrated, razor-sharp teeth that strongly resemble the teeth of a great white shark, hence its name. Carcharodontosaurus was among the apex predators of its time. Its only rival at the time – save for other Carcharodontosaurus – was the sail-back crocodile-like theropod dinosaur Spinosaurus. Like some carnivores, Carcharodontosaurus hunted in pairs, which enabled it to hunt large herbivores. Armed with cunning and blade-like serrated teeth, these carnivores struck at will with deadly force.
