Silverbeet, also known as Swiss chard, or seakale beet, is a very easy-to-grow vegetable rich in vitamins and minerals. Here are 7 tips on how to grow Silverbeet: Note: This video comprises the growing and harvesting of Silverbeet from both last year and this year. Tip 1: When starting the seeds in a container, cover them with a plastic bag to help the seeds germinate faster. You can also sow the seeds directly in the ground or purchase seedlings from a gardening center to speed up the process. Tip 2: Silverbeet can grow all year round as long as the winter temperature remains above 8 to 10 degree Celsius, however the growth will be slower, so it is best to plant them in early spring. Tip 3: Silverbeet prefers fertile, well-drained soils rich in organic matter for best growth. You can use potting soil, a vegetable garden mix, or soil from your compost bin. Tip 4: Plant Silverbeet in a sunny spot, it grows well even in a partly shaded area, as long as there is few hours of direct sunlight. You can also plant Silverbeet in a pot, but make sure the pot is 30 to 40 cm in diameter and only 1 plant in each pot. Tip 5: When harvesting Silverbeet, don't pull the roots out. Harvest the outer leaf stalks and let the smaller ones on the inside grow. Tip 6: Did you know Silverbeet can survive winter if the temperature remains above 5-8 degrees Celsius? In spring, it will grow back again. Just make sure not to overwater during the winter season, as too much water will rot the roots. Tip 7: Add mulch around the base of the plant to help keep the soil moist, ensuring faster growth. This will also prevent dirt from getting stuck on the back of the stalk after the rain, as it is very hard to wash off. This whole section of silverbeet towards the end of the video are those that had survived throught the winter, I re-plant them in the new garden bed towards the end of winter and had harvested 5 times already and it is still in the mid spring.
