The Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, and the Silmarillion among other are populated by races of men, elves, dwarves, orcs, and more, all of which sprang from the imagination of their author, J. R. R Tolkien. An avid scholar of linguistics, much of his inspiration came from Germanic literature: the Icelandic sagas, Norse poetry, and the world of the Anglo-Saxons of Britain. But what about the Frisians? In this video, we'll learn about King Finn and the Fight at Finnsburh, an epic saga taking place in the Migration Era, the murky centuries before the Viking Age, and how it occupied much of Tolkien's work. It may then have inspired certain events and characters in the Lord of the Rings, especially around what happens around Meduseld, the great hall of Edoras in Rohan, and its king, Theoden. *This is a video from my second channel, Frisian with Hilbert, where I talk about all things related to the Frisian languages, culture, and history.
