(28 Jan 2000) Russian/Nat Switzerland has issued a summons for Pavel Borodin - a senior aide of former President Boris Yeltsin - but has acknowledged that it is unlikely that Russia will arrest one of its own citizens. The summons, which is like an arrest warrant, accuses Borodin of laundering money through Swiss banks. The Russian - who was the Kremlin property manager under Yeltsin - on Friday denied any involvement in sleazy financial deals. Borodin was fired from the Kremlin not long after Vladimir Putin became acting President, but he was made state secretary of the new union between Russia and Belarus earlier this week. At a news conference on Friday, Pavel Borodin said the media were stepping up a smear campaign against him. Borodin is accused of taking kickbacks from the Swiss construction company Mabetex, which got a lucrative contract for renovation work at the Kremlin. The scandal is also believed to involve former president Boris Yeltsin and his family members. Borodin accused the media of ignoring the good work he had done redecorating the Kremlin and helping homeless children. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I'm sick and tired of all the trash published about me. You better write that I help hundreds, thousands of people throughout Russia, maintain orphanages all over Russia and keep soccer clubs and the national soccer team of Russia, and that I have adopted kids in my family." SUPER CAPTION: Pavel Borodin, Secretary of Russia-Belarus Union Borodin then mentioned the praise that President Bill Clinton supposedly gave him. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I've succeeded in my life. I've made the Kremlin, I've made the Grand Kremlin Palace. When I showed (Bill) Clinton around, he kept saying 'take a look at this'. I've done it all by myself." SUPER CAPTION: Pavel Borodin, Secretary of s Union In his job as property manager, Borodin controlled (b) billions of dollars in government property.
