A video essay about the underseen Estonian historical drama "In the Crosswind" (Risttuules, 2014), directed by Martti Helde. //Join me on Patreon: / moviewise //Follow me on Twitter: https://x.com/MrMoviewise It deals with the June deportation of 1941, when thousands of Estonians, Lithuanians and Latvians were banished to Siberia under Stalin's orders. The film follows Erna (Laura Peterson), whose letters serve as the voice-over narration that guides the film throughout. Who'd have thought that such a dreary story could come from the country of Arvo Pärt, right? But our major subject is the movie's creative use of tableaux vivants. Following the idea that the deportations led life to "stand still", the story is presented with actors frozen in place as the camera floats around them, capturing the dramatic series of events. An innovative and highly unusual work of cinematic art. Interviews with director Martti Helde: 21st Sarajevo Film Festival Interview with Martti Helde • 21st Sarajevo Film Festival Interview with...
