On this day in 1977, 12-year-old chess prodigy Nigel Short travelled to Brighton to compete in the British Chess Championship. Clearly wise beyond his years, Mr Short gave ITN's Ivor Mills an honest assessment of his prospects of victory. Competition was weak that year, explained Short, as some of the best players were competing abroad. While he practised intently, the confident Nigel was not daunted by the prestige of the competition. Turning up late to his first event, Mr Short left the Lady Mayor of Brighton waiting around for 20 minutes while he finished his hamburger in a cafe down the road. Today, Nigel Short MBE is the Director for Chess Development at the World Chess Federation, also known by the French name Fédération Internationale des Échecs, or FIDE. Having achieved the title of Grandmaster at aged 19, between 1988 and 1989 Short was ranked third in the world by FIDE. In 1993, Short became the first ever English player to play a World Chess Championship match, after qualifying to play against the legendary Garry Kasparov in the PCA world championship in London. #Chess #ChessProdigy #Eccentric #FunnyChildren #Genius #FunnyNews #1970s #1977 #Brighton #Funny #Genius #ChessMaster #ChessPlayer #NigelShort #Grandmaster #FIDE To license the footage featured in this clip, follow the link below: https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/...
