Much like the foundation of the city itself - the origins of roman religion are surrounded by myths, contradictions and legends that bear the hallmark of later revision. But curiously - even our ancient sources acknowledge that in King Numa's inauguration of key ancient roman religion rituals, that he lied to the public regarding their divine inspiration. Even more strange is that Livy, Plutarch and others admit that Numa had political goals attached to his religious religious deception. Centuries later, Augustus would explicitly model Numa as he too brought significant reforms to Roman religion, also with political ends in mind. This history documentary looks at the murky origins of Roman religion , using it to explain how Romans approached religion from a remarkably different vantage point while also outlining how modern attitudes have been shaped by the Christian critiques of Roman civic theology from writers like St. Augustine.
