Dhaka police on raid that killed nine militants

(26 Jul 2016) Police raided an apartment in Bangladesh's capital Tuesday, killing nine suspected Islamic militants and seizing explosives, revolvers and black flags. After police raided the five-story building in Dhaka's Kalyanpur area, the suspects attempted to flee by shooting their way out, but police shot them as they emerged, police said. One suspect was arrested, police said. The suspect was being treated at a hospital for bullet wounds. Authorities were investigating the men's ties but evidence showed they likely were from the banned local group Jumatul Mujahedeen Bangladesh (JMB), the national police chief said. JMB is blamed for the July 1 attack on a restaurant in Dhaka's Gulshan diplomatic area in which 20 people, including Italians and Japanese, were killed by armed gunmen. Asaduzzaman Mia, Dhaka's police commissioner, said the evidence suggested that the suspects belonged to the same group as the restaurant attackers.
