Lumbar hernias occur on the lateral side of our body, that is, between the rib cage and the pelvic bone, in the soft tissue area. These hernias are known as lumbar hernias. We will discuss their symptoms, how they present, how to identify them, what tests are required, and their management in this video. Lumbar hernias are less common compared to some other hernias, such as ventral hernias, which are found above or below the navel. Due to their rarity and location on the lateral side of the abdomen, they are sometimes diagnosed late because people often take time to recognize them. Like other hernias, patients may feel a swelling in the lateral side, or due to factors like higher body weight or smaller hernia size, patients may feel only persistent pain in the lateral side, which increases with coughing or exertion and decreases otherwise. If complications arise in a lumbar hernia, similar to other hernias, such as if the intestine gets trapped, the patient may experience severe pain and vomiting. Diagnosing a hernia involves feeling the swelling in the affected area, which may increase when coughing. Hernia symptoms can be confirmed with a simple ultrasound, and if there is doubt, a CT scan or MRI can provide a clear view of the hernia. Lumbar hernias can occur naturally due to weaknesses in the superior and inferior lumbar triangles, where muscle overlaps leave a gap, allowing the intestine or omentum to protrude. Previous surgeries in the area, such as kidney or ureter operations, can also weaken muscles and lead to hernias. Treating lumbar hernias usually requires surgery, similar to other hernias. Laparoscopic surgery is often successful, involving small incisions to reflect the hernia content back into the abdomen and place a mesh over the defect to prevent recurrence. Laparoscopic surgery has many advantages: smaller cuts, faster recovery, lower recurrence risk, minimal scarring, and a quicker return to normal life.
