Doyle Brunson, who won ten bracelets at the World Series of Poker, passed away on Sunday at the age of 89, his family announced. There was no mention of the reason of death. A letter from Doyle Brunson's family, read in part, "It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson," was shared on Twitter by Brunson's agent, Brian Balsbaugh. When he was 54 years old, in 1988, Brunson, by then known as "Texas Dolly" and "Godfather of Poker," was admitted into the Poker Hall of Fame. In live tournaments alone, he pocketed about $6 million. Among his many accomplishments are 26 appearances at WSOP final tables, a World Poker Tour title, and ten bracelets from the World Series of Poker (tied for second all-time with Phil Ivey and Johnny Chan; Phil Hellmuth is first all-time with sixteen). Brunson won the main event at the World Series of Poker twice (1976 and 1977) and reached the final table three more times. Doyle Brunson is synonymous with the beginning hand 10-2, which he used to win the WSOP main event in back-to-back years.During the poker boom of the early 2000s, he was easily recognisable by his signature cowboy hat, wide grin, and casual attire. As he got older, hearing the announcement that he had been eliminated from the WSOP main event was a highlight of each year. As the icon left the room, the audience rose from their seats to give him a standing ovation. In 2018, he made the final table of the $10,000 2-7 lowball tournament at the World Series of Poker. Brunson's poker career didn't end with tournaments, either; he also often competed in the highest stakes cash games worldwide. A mainstay in the Las Vegas poker scene for decades, he also introduced the game to millions through his books "Super System" and "Super System 2." Many poker players consider the original "Super System" to be the game's holy text. Many tournaments have been named after Brunson because of his role as an advocate for the sport. A native Texan, Brunson was conceived in Longworth. At Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, he excelled as a basketball player, but he was sidelined from playing professionally due to knee issues. Louise, their son Todd, and their daughter Pam are all he has left to mourn his passing. When Todd Brunson won his bracelet in 2005, he and his father became the first father-and-son team to win gold at the World Series of Poker.
