On December 16, 1944, German forces smashed through American defenses in the Ardennes, triggering what would become the bloodiest battle in U.S. Army history. Yet just three weeks earlier, General Jacob Devers and his Sixth Army Group stood along the Rhine River, facing a reality few in Allied headquarters were willing to accept.
